7 Healthy Summer Foods

Summertime.  Time for cookouts and swimming at the pool.  While we are having fun this summer, here are some foods to add to your diet that can help keep you healthy during the hot months.

1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes have lycopene, which is the carotenoid that makes them red and can help protect your skin from sunburn.  Tomatoes have also been known to reduce the risk of some neurological disease like Alzheimer’s.  The gel around the seeds helps improve blood flow and reduce blood clots.

2. Corn

Corn contains two antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, that can help to form macular pigment.  This can help filter out some of the sun’s damaging rays in your eyes.  lutein and zeaxanthin also help lower the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration which can cause blindness.

3. Watermelon

Watermelon is 90% water.  During the summer months, it can keep you cool, dehydrated, and full.  Watermelon has one of the highest concentrations of lycopene which helps fight heart disease and several types of cancer.  It contains the amino acids citrulline and arginine.  These amino acids help maintain blood flow and overall cardiovascular function.

4. Iced Tea

Freshly brewed tea may lower your risk of Alzheimer’s and diabetes.  Tea is full of antioxidants called flavonoids.  Even adding a little lemon juice to your freshly brewed iced tea can help preserve the flavonoids.

5. Blueberries

Blueberries are full of antioxidants.  They are great for protecting your skin from premature aging, reduce the risk of urinary tract infections, and improve eye vision.  Blueberries are also great for reducing belly fat.

6. Plums

Plums are rich in antioxidants.  These delicious fruits can help with eye health, brain health, and anti-aging.  They are also great for lower cholesterol levels.

7. Peaches

Peaches are rich in antioxidants and boost the immune system.  They also play a big role in kidney and liver function, as well as strengthen your heart.

-Have fun this summer and stay healthy!

  1. Sometimes I think corn gets too bad a rap. Yes it has some starch but it also has some great health benefits that you pointed out! Plus I’m from Iowa originally so I can’t go without corn 🙂 Great share, now I’m going to go snack on one of these delicious items.
