10 Signs You May Be Gluten Intolerant

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.  Gluten sensitivity or intolerance is a condition that causes a person to react after ingesting gluten.  More than 50 diseases have been linked to gluten.  Around 15% of the US population is gluten intolerant.

The following symptoms are common for other problems by themselves, but when coupled together they could be a sign that you have gluten intolerance.  Talk with your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms.

Signs

1. Digestive Issues

Gas, bloating, diarrhea and even constipation (especially in children) after eating gluten.

2. Skin Issues

Chicken skin or better known as Keratosis Pilaris, on the back of your arms tend to be a result of a fatty acid deficiency and vitamin A deficiency as well as fat-malabsorptions causes damage to the gut by gluten.

3. Fatigue or Brain Fog

After eating a meal that contains gluten that makes you feel tired, fatigue, or brain fog may mean you are gluten sensitive.

4. Autoimmune Diseases

Being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis, Lupus, Psoriasis, Scleroderma, or Multiple sclerosis.

5. Neurologic Problems

Feeling dizzy, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, or feeling off balance is some symptoms associated with gluten intolerance.

6. Hormone Imbalances

PMS, PCOS, or unexplained infertility.

7. Migraine Headaches

Although migraines are a common symptom of different medical problems, unexplained migraines are a sign of gluten intolerance.

8. Mood Swings

Mood problems such as anxiety, mood swings, depression and ADD.  Individuals with gluten disorders experienced feelings of worry, nervousness, unease, and agitation.

9. Inflammation

Exposure to gluten can cause inflammation, causing widespread pain as well as in joints and muscles.

10. Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Although being the most common nutrient deficiency in the world, but it is one of the first symptoms your doctor will notice as a symptom of possible gluten intolerance.

Here is a list of foods that contain gluten and should be avoided if you are gluten intolerance.

  • commercial bullion and broths
  • cold cuts
  • French fries (often dusted with flour before freezing)
  • processed cheese (e.g., Velveeta)
  • mayonnaise
  • ketchup
  • malt vinegar
  • soy sauce and teriyaki sauces
  • salad dressings
  • imitation crab meat, bacon, etc
  • egg substitute
  • tabbouleh
  • sausage
  • non-dairy creamer
  • fried vegetables/tempura
  • gravy
  • marinades
  • canned baked beans
  • cereals
  • commercially prepared chocolate milk
  • breaded foods
  • fruit fillings and puddings
  • hot dogs
  • ice cream
  • root beer
  • energy bars
  • trail mix
  • syrups
  • seitan
  • wheatgrass
  • instant hot drinks
  • flavored coffees and teas
  • blue cheeses
  • vodka
  • wine coolers
  • meatballs, meatloaf communion wafers
  • veggie burgers
  • roasted nuts
  • beer
  • oats (unless certified GF)
  • oat bran (unless certified GF)
