Oily Skin: Causes and Prevention

Our body naturally produces oils to help keep our skin soft.  But sometimes when the body produces too much, this can cause acne and oily skin.  There are many factors that can cause oily skin from our daily activity, environment, hormones, and largely our genetics.  But I have some simple, easy remedies for you to try.

What Causes Oily Skin

Oily skin is medically known as seborrhea.  It is caused by excess skin oil produced in the pores.  Fluctuating hormones can increase androgen levels, which are hormones that causes oily skin and hair.  Androgens is a male hormone found in both men and women.  The higher the androgen level is, the more sebum is pushed through the pores. Sebum is an oily substance made of fats.  Sebum is not necessarily bad.  It helps protect and moisturize your skin while keeping your hair healthy and shiny.  Excess sebum funneled through the pores then sits on the surface of your skin creating that oily feeling.  Once this oil becomes trapped in the pore and combine with dead skin cells or bacteria, it can cause issues.  Pimples, blackheads and other forms of blemishes can develop.

Genetics play a huge role in oily skin.  The reaction to hormonal changes are mainly due to genes.  However, life events like pregnancy or puberty can cause hormone fluctuations.  Genetic and hereditary factors can determine how your skin reacts to the hormone fluctuations.  Stress, not enough sleep, and what you eat can also affect your insulin resistance, which can cause an increase of sebum.  Finding what works for you and your skin may take some time but do not worry.  Together, maybe we can find a good remedy that works for you.

Ways to Prevent Oily Skin

Since oily skin is mostly a cause by genetics and hormones, you may find yourself helpless.  But good practice with skin care while avoiding unhealthy foods can help. Avoiding foods that are high in sugar, fried, and processed foods are just a few examples.  While food may cause oil skin, oil based makeup can also be a factor.  Try using water based products.

This may seem obvious but washing your face can help with oily skin.  Be careful not to overdo it though.  Remember that your body naturally produces this oil.  Over washing can cause you to become dry.  It is recommended to wash your face twice a day.  Avoid using harsh soaps and try using more gentle glycerin soap.

Blotting papers are thin small papers that allow you to blot excess oil throughout the day.  They won’t stop the sebaceous glands from going into overdrive but they can help.  They are inexpensive and easy to use.

I have found some great remedies to try.  Read my article on Clearer Skin where I found some remedies like honey and lemon that have helped me.  Be careful when using any remedy, whether it is a bought product or at home remedy.   1. Thanks so much for the tips! I have combo skin so my forehead gets suppper oil by the end of the day so I am glad I read up on the tips 🙂

  2. Thanx for this post. I’ve been using lemon juice and Apple cider vinegar for both oily skin and blemishes and it’s been working really well.
